C1, C2, C3 NOS Wheel Weights

I have a limited supply of NOS wheel balance weights that are correct for C1, C2 and C3 Corvette. Based on the packaging, these weights appear to date from the 1950s or 1960s. I know that some of these weights are correct for C2 Corvette because I did the seminal research on C2 wheel weights, which involved input from more than a dozen individuals, including employees from three of the companies that supplied wheel weights to GM in the 1960s. That research took over 4 years to conduct. Those research results were published in an article in The Corvette Restorer in 2005, with a follow-up article several years later. The information in those articles is now used by NCRS judges at Chapter, Regional and National events and NCRS members regularly consult me about what weights are correct for judging.

The first type of weights I have for sale were made by the Perfect Equipment Company. The first photo below shows the vintage box these came in.

Perfect Box

Perfect weights can be identified by the logo embossed on the weight which is the slanted letter P (for Perfect) pierced by an arrow. The weights are the so-called type C, which is the letter that appears along with the weight designation in ounces, embossed at both ends of each weight. I have weights in sizes of 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 2.5 ounces. (Note that I've getting very low on some sizes, so call me to see what I have left.) As you can see in the next, close-up photo, these weights have varying amounts of oxidation. That is to be expected for 60-year-old wheel weights that contain lead.

Please be aware that each weight will vary in the degree of oxidation and in the presence of scratches from being stored together loose in the same box for decades. It will be first come, first served in terms of who gets the best looking weights and the best choice of sizes. As more are sold, the remaining ones will tend to have more oxidation. On some weights, the clip-on steel portion is actually rusty. As time goes on, I’m sure more sizes will sell out. So again, it’s better to buy early while most sizes are still available.

On a Bowtie car I would recommend using these weights as-is. Even though they look aged, that is exactly what Bowtie judges look for. Anything other than as-is would be viewed by a Bowtie judge as suspicious. For weights to be used on a Flight-judged car, some cleaning might be appropriate. Recently I experimented using a product called Evapo-Rust. You can purchase Evapo-Rust on Amazon.com. What's nice about Evapo-Rust is that it is non-toxic. I use it without gloves. It does not have an acid smell, since it is not an acid. Evapo-Rust is supposed to work best on rusty ferrous parts, but I thought, what the heck, I'll give it a try on a set of weights. Below are before and after images of 5 weights that I soaked in Evapo-Rust.

Before & After

After soaking, I brushed the weights under running tap water, then dried them. As you can see, the improvement in looks is like night and day. And I have to say that the cleaned weights actually look better in real life than they do in the B&W photo above. I highly recommend Evapo-Rust. Having said that, the weights you buy from me will not be brushed or cleaned or restored in any way. They are supplied to you in the condition they are in as I pull them from the box. I will leave it up to you to decide whether or not to restore the weights you buy. Please don’t purchase these weights if oxidation, discoloration and/or minor scratches are a problem for you.

The cost is $6.00 per weight. The minimum order I will accept is for 4 weights, of whichever size(s) you specify. Note that if a wheel/tire needed 2.5 ounce to be within the GM balance spec, GM would not install two 1.0 ounce weights and one 0.5 ounce weight. Before you contact me to buy weights, please do your homework and be prepared to tell me exactly how many of each size you want. Don’t expect judges to believe that a wheel on your car or the spare required no weights. A wheel with no weights is simply not very believable and would be judged as not typical of factory production. I cannot predict which size and how many weights will be needed for your set of wheels.

Finally, please note that these weights are only correct for steel wheels. If you have aluminum knockoffs, I can’t help you. I know of no source for correct NOS wheel weights for C2 aluminum wheels.

I also have a limited supply of 1.5 ounce NOS weights with the logo consisting of the number 14 inside an raised oval border. These weights were sold under the Speed Clip name, and they were a known supplier to GM. Weights with this logo have been found on unused spare tires on a 1967 Corvette, multiple 1969 Corvettes, and a 1972 Corvette. I don't know how much earlier than 1967 or later than 1972 weights with this logo were used. Again, I sell them unrestored. They will clean up very nicely by soaking in Evapo-Rust and brushing. All I have are 1.5 ounce NOS examples of what I call the 14-Oval weights. They are also $6.00 each, with a minimum order of 4.
